The Icelandic Intellectual Property Office (ISIPO) and the University of Iceland have signed a new cooperation agreement aimed at enhancing education, awareness, and advisory services related to intellectual property (IP) within the University. The agreement was signed today at the University of Iceland’s Main Building by Borghildur Erlingsdóttir, Director General of ISIPO, and Silja Bára R. Ómarsdóttir, Rector of the University of Iceland.

Under the agreement, ISIPO will provide staff and students at the University of Iceland with educational sessions on IP rights, participate in teaching, and co-organize specialised events in collaboration with university faculty. In addition, at least one master’s level student will be offered an internship at ISIPO each semester. Both students and staff will also have access to general intellectual property advisory services free of charge.

“It is essential to promote general understanding of intellectual property protection in society to support innovation and the practical application of research. Through this agreement, we aim to ensure that students and researchers at the University of Iceland have easy access to knowledge and support in the field of IP rights, which are often a key element in bringing good ideas to life,” says Borghildur Erlingsdóttir, Director General of ISIPO.

Silja Bára R. Ómarsdóttir, who signed the agreement on behalf of the University, emphasized the importance of IP awareness: “Understanding how to protect the intellectual property created within the University of Iceland is crucial for making use of innovations developed here, for the benefit of society as a whole. We are therefore very pleased with this agreement, which provides a strong foundation for further collaboration.”

This new agreement builds upon a previous cooperation between the institutions but introduces broader educational initiatives and increased support for both students and staff.
