Last week, Borghildur Erlingsdóttir, Director General of the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office (ISIPO), and Karin Žvokelj, Director General of the Slovenian Intellectual Property Office, signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening cooperation between the two offices.

According to the MOU, the offices will share knowledge and expertise in areas such as the development of services, national developments in intellectual property (IP) law, international cooperation, communication initiatives, and measures to combat counterfeiting and piracy.

During the visit, the Director General of the Slovenian office met with the ISIPO management team. The Slovenian government has recently adopted an ambitious national IP strategy in close cooperation with ministries and stakeholders, and numerous initiatives are being implemented to support innovation and raise awareness of the importance of registering IP rights. The discussions also covered the development of standards for valuing registered IP rights, including in connection with loan financing where IP rights are used as collateral. Another key initiative presented was the introduction of provisional patents, enabling inventors to secure temporary protection for their inventions with a simplified filing.
