Representatives from the intellectual property offices of the Nordic and Baltic countries gathered today at the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office for their annual cooperation meeting on patents.

The meeting covered key challenges and priorities each office is addressing in the field of patents. Topics included legislative and procedural developments, trends in application volumes and processing times, customer service strategies, and how the offices encourage innovators and companies to consider the importance of protecting their inventions through patents.

Participants also discussed the use of digital tools and AI in application processing, sharing experiences with various solutions—including those developed by the European Patent Office (EPO) for use by member states' IP offices—and explored how artificial intelligence can support patent examination.

The meeting is a part of a strong and ongoing collaboration among the Nordic and Baltic countries in the field of intellectual property protection. It serves as an important platform for knowledge sharing and exchanging best practices among the offices. Each year, one of the countries in the region hosts these meetings, and this year, Iceland is the host. Later this year, Iceland will also host the annual meeting of the directors of the offices, along with further discussions on trademarks, designs, communications, and marketing.
