A delegation from the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office recently visited the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), which is responsible for the registration of trademarks and designs within the European Union (EU).

The delegation met, among others, with João Negrão, Executive Director of EUIPO, to discuss the implementation of the cooperation agreement between the two offices established in 2013, and the significance of this cooperation in light of Iceland’s membership in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the internal market. Discussions included the importance for the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office to participate in work under the auspices of EUIPO related to the interpretation and implementation of laws and regulations, as similar legal frameworks apply in the field of intellectual property rights across the EEA.

Topics also included artificial intelligence and its impact and use in the work of the offices, funding and support for entrepreneurs, and the new EUIPO Copyright Hub, among other matters. Additionally, representatives from the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office received a presentation on how applications for trademark and design registrations are examined at EUIPO.

The cooperation agreement with EUIPO has, among other things, led to the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office’s participation in TMview and TMclass for trademarks, and DesignView and DesignClass for designs. The agreement also provides opportunities for continuing education for staff in the field of intellectual property rights and internships at EUIPO, both long- and short-term.

Under the EEA Agreement, the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office also has observer status in cooperation meetings of EU member states concerning trademarks, designs, and the enforcement of intellectual property rights, and regularly attends meetings organized by EUIPO. The Office has also participated in and implemented key EUIPO cooperation projects related to the interpretation of legal provisions on trademarks and designs.
