ISIPO Annual Report 2024 Published

The Annual Report of the Icelandic Intellectual Property Office (ISIPO) for the year 2024 has been published and is now available at hugverk.is (in Icelandic only). The report provides an overview of the Office's activities during the year, including statistics on applications and granted rights, key operational figures, and articles by staff members on various intellectual property topics.
In her foreword, Borghildur Erlingsdóttir, Director General of ISIPO, highlights the launch of a new strategic plan in 2024. The plan emphasizes the Office’s commitment to delivering excellent service, fostering a professional and collaborative work environment, and strengthening ISIPO as a modern public institution. With a clear vision for the future and targeted actions, case processing has become more efficient, and significant progress has been made in digital transformation — including the introduction of “My Pages” on island.is and a new system for assessing trademark registrability.
The report notes that the processing time for national trademark applications is now only 2–4 weeks. For international trademark applications, processing time has been reduced by nearly half — from 15 months to 9 months. Over 99% of all applications submitted to ISIPO in 2024 were filed electronically, and a total of 5,573 documents were delivered through the electronic mailbox system.
At the end of 2024, there were approximately 9,600 active patents in Iceland, 64,439 registered trademarks, and 1,460 registered designs. Applications for national patents decreased by 7% compared to the previous year, while validations of European patents increased by 7%. International trademark applications dropped by 12%, whereas national trademark applications rose by 4%. Design applications saw a 16% decline during the year.
ISIPO’s operating revenue in 2024 amounted to ISK 624.5 million, with around 90% of revenue generated from foreign applicants. Salaries accounted for the largest expenditure, comprising about 69% of total costs.
