A new digital portal for patent applications

It is now possible to apply for a patent in Iceland on the Intellectual Property Office’s web, with Icelandic digital ID. The office recently started using a new Icelandic version of the Front Office application portal, which was developed by the European Patent Office (EPO) in collaboration with member offices. With the opening of the application system at hugverk.is, almost all of the office’s services have become digital and it is possible to apply for all major industrial intellectual property rights in Iceland on hugverk.is
Through the new portal, it is now possible to apply for national patents in Iceland, confirmation of European patents and supplementary certificates for pharmaceutical patents (SPC certificates), in Icelandic and English. Implementation of the system began in March this year and has been very successful. Iceland is the fourth country to implement the system, but previously it has been adopted in Greece, Lithuania and Spain. The system which has been used to receive patent applications, EOLF, will be closed on January 1, 2024. On the ISIPO’s web, it is also possible to apply for the registration of trademarks and industrial designs and submit various other documents digitally.
The new portal is open to anyone who has an Icelandic digital ID or smart card from the EPO.
